About the MMB Program
The Master's of Microbial Biotechnology (MMB) is a Professional Science Master's program focusing on the intersection of business and science. Students gain experience working on semester-long projects directly with companies, which range from large biopharma and agricultural biotechnology companies to small start-ups. This provides a unique opportunity for students to develop professional skills and contribute meaningful work across the biotechnology industry.
Clinical Laboratory Experience
In the clinical lab, I gained extensive experience working with a wide variety of human samples and strengthened my ability to work quickly and accurately, especially in high-pressure situations. I became confident in analyzing test results and recognizing when results require further investigation. I also became familiar with advanced testing methods and instrumentation that align closely with many biotech workflows.
I further developed precision, attention to detail, and consistency while learning from veteran lab scientists and forming strong professional relationships and friendships along the way!
Plant Conservation Genetics Research
In the Estep plant conservation genetics lab at App State, I developed lab skills in cellular and molecular biology. Working with graduate students, I became comfortable running and troubleshooting experiments. I learned how to stay organized with samples, protocols, and day-to-day lab tasks. I was given the space to balance working independently with teaming up on projects. I contributed to projects by performing CTAB DNA extraction and using BLAST to analyze genetic primer sequences designed in our lab.
I built a solid plant biology background that helps connect what happens in the lab to real-world applications. I had the opportunity to see beautiful, protected habitats and contribute to conservation research!
